Senior Studio Project: Ohana Oasis: Holistic Dementia Care Rooted in Community

Concept

Nestled in Palm Desert, California, Ohana Oasis invites early-onset dementia patients of all backgrounds, their family members, and their caregivers to relax and engage in Hawaiian holistic healing practices as a community. Ohana Oasis is comprised of five key spaces: the kitchen, ukulele room, salon & spa, hula room, and the movie theater.

Ohana Kitchen

This open-concept country kitchen will allow patients to watch and smell the food preparation. This stimulates appetite and the brain. There is plenty of seating in this large space to encourage community and connection.

Ohana Ukulele Room

This acoustically-sound room allows seniors to learn an instrument and play for family and friends. This will help increase and improve brain activity for those struggling with memory loss issues.

Ohana Salon & Spa (1)

The resting areas within the Ohana Spa allow patients to take a nap and recharge. State regulations require daycare centers to provide rest and relaxation accommodations for patients. This space helps the patients and their families renew both their minds and their bodies.

Ohana Salon & Spa (2)

The Ohana Salon & Spa is unique in the sense that it is open to not only patients, but their family members and caregivers too. The salon offers haircuts, manicures, and pedicures.

Ohana Hula Room

Learning how to hula dance benefits senior citizens through improved physical fitness that is not too difficult for their physical ability levels, enhanced mental health, social interaction, and cultural appreciation. Hula allows all to communicate stories through dance.

Ohana Movie Theater

Connecting over a movie is beneficial for the relationship between an early-onset dementia patient and family. Watching favorite movies helps to stimulate the memory and discussion abilities.
